The Bellarine Railway - Volunteer Daniel Featherstone

Wednesday, February 29, 2012
The Bellarine Railway has a team of committed and hard working volunteers. This month we meet one of them...
Daniel Featherstone
Name:
Daniel Featherston

Volunteer position(s):
Guard, Signaller, Diesel Locomotive Assistant and Trainee Driver

No. of years at the Bellarine Railway:
7 years

What made you want to volunteer:

Growing up in the Geelong area, I enjoyed trains from a early age. My favourite toy throughout my childhood and adolescence was an H.O. scale train set.

I have been a happy traveller on the famous Zig-Zag Railway in NSW and some Steamrail Victoria trips along main lines in Victoria. In 2005, I was looking to get more involved in my interest, I signed up as a member of the Bellarine Railway. I began by helping in the workshop and soon began training to become a Guard.

A typical day on Bellarine Railway:

Each day at the Bellarine Railway is different. One day I am running trains as guard, which involves keeping the train on schedule and maintaining the safe operation of the train, as well as talking to and assisting passengers; the next I am shunting, performing track work or preparing trains for scheduled services.

Most enjoyable part of volunteering:
Being part of a team with mates that have similar interests.

Why should people go on the Blues Train:

I highly recommend the Blues Train, you will have the best time on the Blues Train listening to the bands with your friends and family. You often see famous faces, like I have over the years including TV personalities Ernie Dingo from the Great Outdoors and Coxy and Brody from Postcards.

Interested in becoming getting involved?
The Bellarine Railway is a not-for-profit voluntary organisation. You can get involved by becoming a member, making a monetary donation or volunteering some of your time. For details on getting involved, see www.bellarinerailway.com.au
